What is Non-Duality?

- Prashant Trivedi

To understand non-duality and how it operates
in our lives we must first think back to a
state before this physical universe came into
    being.

Only the 'Creator' or in Vedic terminology, the
'Paramatman,' exists in that timeless state.

We can not refer to Paramatman as a male or
female, because it is without gender.

Being beyond time and space, and Paramatman
is also beyond nature and it's qualities.

Before our universe began, because Parmatman
alone existed, there were no contradictions,
there was perfect non-duality as 'all was
    one.'

Then cames the first step of creation, where
the 'one' divided into the 'two,' and that
    is where duality began.

Among the 'two,' one is the passive, or the
male principle, and the other is active, or
    the female principle.

The female principle creates this physical
Universe, while the purpose of the male is to
observe, share, partake, and enjoy, doing all
without becoming attached to any of it.

All creation is dual in nature, and
everything in nature is based on a pair of
    opposites.

    Modern science confirms this.

In human terms we experience this duality as
pleasure and pain, pessimism and optimism,
life and death, and so on.

There is only one way to incorporate
    non-duality in our daily lives.

We must discover the Atman, or that which is
known as 'the creator's part' or our true
self that lies within each of us.

In identifying the Atman, or true self, we
realign our 'ego,' or our sense of 'I' or
    'me.'

When we are able to align our ego with the
Atman, we reach the status of an observer, we
cam view situations world in a factual
perspective, we understand our options, and
we no longer are affected by the drama of
    life.

As such, we are able to serve in our
    appropriate role without ever becoming
    attached to it.

Action without attachment is the key to
    true empowerment.

To attain Atman is similar to an actor
performing a part in a play, and all the time
knowing that in reality he is not the part he
    is playing.

In much the same way, we play our part in the
theatre of life without becoming personally
involved with the part we play.

This is not always an easy task, because the
illusionary power of nature, or the Web of
    Maya, which is very strong.

Like an insect, once caught in this web, we
are more often than not allowed to pass
    through.

Atman and non-duality lie within each of us,
within our 'true self,' which at no point in
time is affected by this web.

Atman is that part of us which never dies, is
timeless and is always free of duality.
